Old Abbey renovated into an astonishing residence
Strasbourg
Description
Nestled in the historic center of a charming wine-growing village 30 minutes from Strasbourg, the history of this extraordinary 660 m² complex dates back to the 17th century. An integral part of an old abbey, it brings together the doorman's house and part of the secretary's house of the religious building. In the 1970s it benefited from an original reinterpretation organized around a monumental fireplace signed by Jacques Couëlle.
A discreet door provides access to a small courtyard marking the transition with the village. From the entrance, the subtle mix of natural materials and the half-level games catch the eye. The imposing exposed beams contrast with the immaculate white of the concrete. A majestic hall leads to a lounge area nestled in the hollow of a first hearth of the fireplace. It extends into a dining area perched on a promontory hiding an indoor swimming pool and from which the 11 meters height of the building can be admired. An arched opening leads to the exterior of the building where a second courtyard is revealed. Decorated with Gothic remains recovered from a Provençal chapel, it offers an atmosphere imbued with romance as well as a view of the church tower.
A large cellar dating from the origins of the building is overlooked by a solid wooden staircase leading to a first sleeping area. It consists of three bedrooms, a bathroom and a sauna. The staircase continues its course towards the upper level where there is a fourth bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen.
In the center of the building, the fireplace accommodates a second fireplace as well as a second lounge area also extended by a dining room offering a view overlooking the lower level and the superb Provençal Gothic bay integrated into the building in the 1970s.
A true organic extension of the fireplace, a staircase decorated with ironwork leads to the top level which reveals a large reception room nestled under the frame. In addition to the third hearth of the fireplace, it also accommodates a library where we recognize the rounded and instinctive shapes of Jacques Couëlle.
An independent apartment offers more conventional spaces with a kitchen with central island extended by a living room with cathedral ceiling overlooked by a mezzanine. The latter opens onto a pleasant terrace. The sleeping area consists of a small living room with fireplace, a large bedroom with custom storage and a bathroom.
An independent studio as well as a garage accessible from the street complete the services of this property.
This exceptional location will be ideal for your photo shoots, filming or professional events.
